How does LENS work?

The Low Energy Neurofeedback System (LENS) is a form of direct, EEG-based neurofeedback designed to help the brain settle back into balanced, efficient functioning.

 

Ongoing stress and trauma can leave the nervous system stuck in a kind of "neural gridlock" — patterns of over-  or under-activation that keep the brain from regulating itself well.

 

LENS works with the brain's own electromagnetic signalling to gently loosen these patterns, giving the brain a chance to reorganise and return to more optimal function.

What makes LENS distinctive is that it asks nothing of you.

 

There's no screen to watch, no reward tone to chase, no conscious effort to regulate your own brainwaves — you simply sit back and relax while a tiny, faint electromagnetic signal, mirrored back to your brain does the work. That reflection alone is often enough to prompt the brain to shift out of stuck or rigid patterns and settle into a calmer, more organised rhythm. And because the signal lasts only a fraction of a second, there's nothing to sense and nothing to actively participate in.

This is part of what allows change to happen quickly.

 

Rather than training the brain over many repetitions to adopt a new pattern, LENS offers a gentle nudge that lets the brain reorganise itself, using its own natural capacity for self-regulation.

This also means LENS works well for people who find it hard to engage in more effortful or attention-demanding processes

— young children, people who are highly anxious or fatigued, or those whose cognitive load is already high.

 

Since the process asks for nothing more than rest, it removes the barrier of needing to concentrate, perform, or "get it right." The brain does what it already knows how to do — restore balance — once it's given the right conditions and a moment of gentle feedback to work from.

How is LENS different from traditional neurofeedback?

LENS operates much faster than traditional neurofeedback. Sessions are short and require no active effort from the client — making it ideal for those who can't focus on a screen for long periods. Most people see results within the first session, with most achieving lasting change in 12 to 20 sessions.

How successful is the LENS?

Over twenty-plus years' experience, we've seen consistently strong results. A review of client improvement across some Australian clinics found 80% of clients reported an 80% or more improvement after treatment. LENS tends to work well for anyone whose symptoms stem from faulty brain regulation — though if progress stalls or doesn't hold, there's usually an outside factor at play that needs addressing first.

Is neurofeedback a cure?

For organic brain disorders, neurofeedback helps the brain function better rather than "curing" the condition, so symptoms may seem to disappear.

 

For problems of dysregulation, there's no disease to cure — self-regulation is often the remedy itself.
